Descale

When the Calc / Clean light flashes slowly, Philips wants you to descale the machine

  1. Clean the drip tray and the coffee grounds container
  2. Remove the AquaClean water filter (if any)
  3. Pour 250ml citric acid based descaler in the water tank and then fill it with water up to the Clean indication
  4. Place a large 1.5L container
  5. Press the Calc / Clean icon for 3 seconds and then press the start/stop button.
  6. The descaling procedure lasts 30 minutes
  7. Empty the water tank, rinse it and then refill it with fresh water up to the Calc / Clean indication.
  8. Replace the 1.5L container
  9. Press the start/stop button again.
  10. The rinsing phase, starts and lasts 3 minutes
  11. When the descaling procedure is finished, the AquaClean light flashes for a while to remind you

Main settings

  • amount of beans - dial +/-
  • selection buttons: 1 espresso / 2 espressos / 1 normal / 2 normals

Other settings

  • grinding coarse
    • NB: factory setting (5) is considered to be ok
    • dial is located in the beans reservoir
    • only adjust while grinding and try one click at a time
  • water temperature
    • turn appliance off
    • set switch in I position
    • press and hold the 1 espresso button until the lights come on
    • press the 1 espresso button to select the temperature (low-high, 4 settings)
    • press the 1 coffee button to save the setting
  • amount of water per selection button
    • hold down selection button until the lights come on and the appliance starts making coffee
    • press the button again to stop the water and memorize
  • water hardness
    • NB: this determines the interval the appliance warns you to descale
    • turn appliance off
    • set switch in I position
    • press and hold the round button below the dial until the lights come on
    • press the 1 espresso button to select the temperature (soft-hard, 4 settings)
    • press the 1 coffee button to save the setting

Descale

Descale the appliance when the round button on the control panel flashes red.

Important!

(from the manual)

  • Descaler contains acids which may irritate the skin and eyes. It is vital to respect the manufacturer’s safety warnings given on the descaler pack and the warnings relating to the procedure to follow in the event of contact with the skin and eyes.
  • Use citric acid based descalers. Under no circumstances should you use sulphamic or acetic based descalers.
  • Danger of burns. Hot water containing acid flows from the cappuccino maker. Avoid contact.

Short description

1. Turn the appliance on (the red light flashes)
2. Fill the water tank with descaler up to the level 'A' (100 ml) and add water up to level 'B'.
3. Place an empty container under the cappuccino maker.
4. Press and hold the flashing red light button for 5 seconds. The light will stop flashing.
5. Turn the steam dial on.
The descale program will run for about 30 minutes until the water tank is empty and the red light is flashing.
6. Turn the steam dial off.
7. Rinse and fill the water tank with clean water.
8. Turn the steam dial on. The water tank will empty into the container.
9. Turn the steam dial off.
10. Fill the water tank again, the machine is now ready for use.

Original description

  1. Turn the appliance on and wait until it is ready for use.
  2. Empty the water tank and remove the softener filter, if present.
  3. Pour the descaler into the tank up to the level 'A' (100 ml) marked on the back of the tank, then add water up to level 'B'. Place an empty container with a minimum capacity of 1.5 liters under the cappuccino maker.
  4. Wait for the coffee lights to come on steadily.
  5. Press the round button and hold it down for at least 5 seconds to confirm that you have added the solution and begin the descaling procedure. The light in the button remains on steadily to indicate that the descaling program has begun. The light flashes telling you to turn the steam dial to the 'I' position.
  6. Turn the steam dial a half turn anticlockwise to the 'I' position. The descaler solution flows out of the cappuccino maker into the underlying container.
  7. The descale program automatically performs a series of rinses and pauses to remove the limescale. It is normal for several minutes of inactivity to elapse between rinses.
    • After about 30 minutes, the water tank is empty and the and red light flashes. Turn the steam dial clockwise as far as it will go to the '0' position. The appliance is now ready for rinsing through with clean water.
  8. Empty the container used to collect the descaler solution and replace it empty under the cappuccino maker.
  9. Remove the water tank, empty, rinse under running water, fill with clean water and replace. The red light flashes.
  10. Turn the steam dial anticlockwise to the 'I' position. Hot water comes out of the spout.
  11. When the water tank is completely empty, the light flashes.
  12. Turn the dial to the '0' position. The light goes off.
  13. Fill the water tank again and the machine is ready for use.
