Pokemon GO

Starter tips

Collection:

A new game, starting out with Pikachu:

Power up

Save your dust for later and don't power-up your Pokemon just because you can

  • When evolving Pokemon their attack types change randomly, evolve your Pokemon fully in one go and check if they are any good
  • Walking around, catching Pokemon until you are ready you might find better candidates
  • When you have a higher level (20+) you will catch higher level Pokemon that need less power-ups
  • Take the Pokemon IV in consideration by using 'appraise', filter for high IV (3*,4*)

A guide on 'breakpoints':

Search and filter

To help you with searching for the right Pokemon there are a lot of functions and keywords you can use.

Logical:

  • AND with &
  • OR with ,
  • NOT with !

Some examples:

  • defender
  • evolve
  • 3* 4*
  • @weather
  • !shiny & weedle,pidgey,caterpie

Pick your team

At level 5 you will have to pick one of the three teams. After that you can change it only when spending 1000 coins and not more than once a year. The most popular team is blue (Mystic). A bit less popular is the red team (Valor) after that comes the Yellow team (Instinct). Make sure you pick the same team as your friends.

Starting out, it helps if you can join Gyms without having to capture them yourself. So, if you see a lot of Red in your neighborhood it might help if you join team Valor (the red team).

Team GO Rocket Invasions

At some point you will run into the black 'R' people, with the choice to battle them. Tips on fighting:

Incubators

  • You have 9 eggs and you can't remove them. Get the lower km eggs out first, they are less interesting but also removed more quickly
  • You don't need to buy incubators, you will get some for free. Your coins are better spent on other things
  • See also "Pidgey/Weedle spam"

Stops en gyms

  • Spin the picture at pokestops and within Gyms and get new items
  • Place Pokemon in Gyms to earn pokecoins.

Pokecoins

Get them:

  • Get some by placing your Pokemon in Gyms
  • Throw some real money at it (and be a cheat ;-)

Earning coins with Gyms:

  • You will get 1 coin per 10 minutes up to 50 coins per day (0:00-23:59) for Pokemon that are placed in Gyms. In other words: you need 8 hours and 20 minutes with one Gym.
  • You only get pokecoins after your Pokemon has been kicked out. So no coins for you if none get kicked out before 0:00
  • Pokemon stationed at a Gym will slowly loose health, you can replenish this by giving up to 10 berries. A golden raspberry will give full health.

Spend on:

  1. Item space (200 coins for +50)
  2. Pokemon storage (200 coins for +50)
  3. Raid passes

Pidgey/Weedle spam

Farm and store these types of Pokemon. Use a lucky egg and evolve every Pokemon for the lowest candy cost (12). Try to fit as many as 70 evolves into the 30 minutes double experience period. This will get you around 150,000 experience points. If you are blessed with a double experience event this would go up to 300,000 experience points.

Common Pokémon with 12 candy evolve:

  • Weedle
  • Pidgey
  • Caterpie

A bit less common:

  • Pidove
  • Wurmple
  • Whismur

Note:

  • Time hatching eggs within this 30 minute period by walking up to 200 meters from hatching. Hatching eggs gets you even more experience per minute than evolve does.
  • With every evolve you receive 1 candy, so the cost is really 11 candy per evolve.
  • Transferring the evolved Pokemon will get you another candy back but this is best done after the lucky egg period has finished.

You will need at least 80*11+1 = 881 candy for 80 evolves. Use below calculation to see how many Pokemon you should transfer to have enough candy to evolve the remaining Pokemon:

You can also save up to 80*11+1-80*3 = 641 candy of a certain type while transferring all Pokemon, if you catch 80 Pokemon after that you will have enough candy to evolve them.

  • Formula: NumEvolves*8+1 (NumEvolves=80)

Bag is full

Make some space:

  • Activate incense and catch Pokemon
  • Use the fruit, you can fruit-up (x10) any gym defender of your team. This will also get you much needed dust. Note that if you are close to the Gym this will have more effect on CP
  • Battle and heal
  • Throw out some red balls, revives and such

Note:

  • You can ignore gifts, they don't count as bag space
  • Eventually you will need more space as you get different types of items and for convenience

Pokemon storage is full

Make some space:

  • Filter for !shiny & !shadow & 2*,1*,0*
  • Reverse sort on CP
  • Transfer-away

Note:

  • Eventually you will need more storage space as the number of Pokemon you want to keep will keep growing

Evolving Eevee

You can control the next Eevee evolutionary step by naming (case sensitive) your Eevee as follows:

  1. 'Linnea' to evolve to Leafeon Quick Attack / Solar Beam
  2. 'Pyro' to evolve to Flareon
  3. 'Rainer' to evolve to Vaporeon
  4. 'Sparky' ' to evolve to Jolteon
  5. 'Tamao' to evolve to Umbreon
  6. 'Sakura' to evolve to Espeon
  7. 'Rea' to evolve to Glaceon

Note: this will only work once per type, so it is better to practice your waiting and catch Eevee with good stats.

Note:

Get your Buddy excited

You will need 32 points per day (0:00-23:59) to reach excited mood through a number of activities. Each activity has a 30 minute cool-down, except for walking.

Buddy activities:

  • Walk 2km (+3)
  • Feed, Play, Snapshot, Battle (each +1)
  • Visit a new Pokestop or Gym(+1)
  • Open a buddy present (+3)
  • Visit a location hinted by your buddy (+3)

Walking around with an excited buddy:

  • Double the hearts you can earn to increase your buddy level and unlock extra buddy functions
  • Half the walking distance for a candy. Some candies are hard to get and walking around with that Pokemon as buddy is the best way to get them

Steps:

Time +/- Activities Excitement level
0:00 Start running (8km/h) 0
0:00 Get your buddy to join you by feeding 3 berries 1
0:00 Play + Snapshot + Set a timer for 30mins 3
0:30 Feed berry + Play + Snapshot + Battle + 4km 13
1:00 Feed berry + Play + Snapshot + Battle + 4km 23
1:30 Feed berry + Play + Snapshot + Battle + 4km 32

Note:

  • Tried it couple of times and it seems to be faster than described here
  • Battle with your buddy as last in line
  • It will stay excited as long there are berries (at least 3 hours) and then will lose 1 point per 30 mins

Pokemon Spoofing

To get up to speed up your leveling you might want to get some progress when your not able to go outside. For this we have 'Spoofing'. This means you will take control of the GPS locations that are send to apps on your device.

NOTICE

  • Be warned that developers of Pokemon continually find ways of detecting spoofing. When you are caught your account may be closed down.
  • Take travel time into account, it might be noticed when you are going around the globe in a matter of minutes

Rooting

This instruction is for Samsung Tab S SM-T800 PHN T800XXU1CRJ1

Make sure you have the original stock image at hand if yo need to start again:

  • SM-T800 PHN T800XXU1CRJ1

Download at:

Note about rooting your device: you can go back to a stock image but for many devices it is impossible to reset the counter that records 'unofficial' configurations.

Flash TWRP for your device

Note: this is what will set your 'KNOX counter'. Some security sensitive apps may never work again and any warranty you had is probably lost. On the other hand: a world of ultimate control lies before you.

TWRP is a tool in the 'recovery' partition that allows you to flash anything you want to your device.

Instructions for Windows based machine:

1. Get Odin, no need to install

2. Download/install Samsung USB drivers (if needed)

3. Boot into Download mode

  • Power off (hold power button)
  • Press key combination
Device Download mode Recovery mode Reboot
Galaxy Tab S10 Volume Down + Home button + Power Volume Up + Home button + Power
Galaxy S8 Power + Volume Down + Bixby Power + Volume Up + Bixby Power + Volume Up + Volume Down
Galaxy S5 mini Home + Volume Down + Power Home + Volume Up + Power Home + Volume Down + Power

Note: the button combinations in this instruction are specific for these devices

4. Flash twrp-3.4.0-0-chagallwifi.img.tar with Odin

  • It should say 'added' in de log, otherwise you may have to install the Samsung USB drivers.
  • Select "twrp-3.4.0-0-chagallwifi.img.tar" in AP slot, don't change any other settings, click start

5. Boot

Root your device with Magisk

Instruction

There are other options but this instruction is for Magisk. Magisk is typical in that it does not change any files on the system partition so that is will be harder to detect.

1. Download Magisk system-less root (only boot is modified, system is not)

Note: also download the uninstaller,as noted, the uninstaller will remove magisk but might not erase all traces.

2. Download Magisk manager APK

3. Copy the files device storage

4. Boot into TWRP:

  • Power off (hold power button)
  • Hold Volume UP + Home button + Power button

5. Flash/install Magisk-v[...].zip

6. Wipe Cache/Dalvik

7. Reboot to System

8. Start and update the Magisk App

Hide Magisk and GPS Joystick

Install Terminal Emulator for Android from the playstore

Magisk:

  • Use the 'Hide Magisk Manager' feature in the options and give the app a new name (default is 'Manager')
  • Enable the MagiskHide feature in the options
  • Tap the 'shield', then in the 'MagiskHide' menu you select the apps that are not allowed to detect Magisk
    • Install Magisk module 'busybox'
    • Install Magisk module 'systemizer', as mentioned below
    • Reboot for changes to apply

You will need something to 'systemize' the GPS Joystick, this can be added with Magisk module 'systemizer' and Busybox. Use the Magisk app to add these.

GPS Joystick:

  • Download the correct unlocked version from:
  • Enable the 'Privacy mode' via the quick settings and rename and repackage GPS Joystick
  • Uninstall the original GPS Joystick app
  • Use 'systemizer' to change the renamed GPS Joystick into a system app
    • This is a command you run in the terminal, first you need to type 'su' to become root, then you start the tool by typing 'systemizer'
    • Basically the app will be moved from /data/app/ to /system/priv-app/
    • Note that at this point it is repackaged and will have a random name
    • Normal apps will not be able to access /system/priv-app/
    • Reboot for changes to apply

Troubleshooting - Jumping to real location

There is a problem where your real location is detected and your position jumps around between the real and spoofed location. There are some tings you can try to prevent this.

  • Disable "Google Location Accuracy" service, this would use WiFi and Bluetooth to find your location
  • Disable Google "Improve accuracy" function - same as above
  • (This really helps) wrap the backside of the device in aluminum foil
  • Try the fixes (1,2,3,4) in the GPS Joystick app
